We’re Stop P31

Dear Diary Coffeehouse is a major stop on the Austin Studio Tour this year! We’re so excited to be a featured partner—we live for the East Austin art scene, and we’re so proud to be part of it!

This year, we’re going ham with the help of our friends Samantha Soper (Creative Cuties), Caroline Stradley (Rusty Paige), Calais Morgan (Team Snacks), Dave Yeats (Dave Yeats Music, Minneapolis Hotel), Kirsten Boyd (website), and Golden Ratio.

Festivities will take place in our shop (1212 Chicon #103) and on our patio one block South of us (1208 Chicon).

In our shop

Solarium 2021

Our shop is open 7am – 9pm every day, including the weekends of Austin Studio Tour. Inside, you will see Solarium, a botanical themed group art show featuring over 33 works by 12 artists. Our interior looks like a beautiful indoor garden with moss hanging from decorative beams and flower paintings on the walls. This show is uniquely mixed media too: for the first time, we have a mix of fiber arts, paper crafts, preserved plants… In general, we stick to illustration, but we decided to do a something a little different this time.

Artists

Dear Diary Collection

We also have the largest collection of stickers made by local artists on the East Side. They are packed into a small space, but don’t let that fool you! Over 30 artists are represented.

Unlike the stickers, our prints rotate out. We always have large prints by Tim Doyle (Nakatomi) because they are super popular, but the other prints are made by the artists in whatever show we have hanging (in this case, lots of nature prints by Solarium artists).

Drink Specials

Our baristas will be serving flora and foliage themed drink specials during the two weekends of East Austin Studio Tour. We really appreciate your tips—the whole team is working extra hard these next two weeks, and none of these festivities would be possible without them!

Golden Ratio

The Golden Ratio team is leaving coupons all over the east side. If you happen upon one of these, it could be for a free Golden Mocha latte at Dear Diary Coffeehouse! This low acid, high caffeine drinks is chocolatey with a strong peanut vibe — like a latte version of a Celeste’s Best peanut butter cup!

Team Snacks Bike Tour

Team Snacks Cycling is leading a casual bike ride around East Austin to check out the art. The ride leaves from Dear Diary Coffeehouse (1212 Chicon) at 12pm sharp Sunday, November 21st. It ends at the patio at 2pm, just in time for the East Austin Creative Cutie-o Tour. All riders are welcome to join!

At the patio

Live Art & Artist Market

Samantha Soper is a major player in Austin’s art community. Her organization, Creative Cuties is an extremely inclusive group that pulls together artists from a broad range of genres and communities. In addition to monthly meetups, Sam organizes street art, artists markets, murals, and other events that really play up the public and community side of the art world.

East Austin Cutie-o Tour is the backbone of Dear Diary’s creative programming during Austin Studio Tour, and we have Sam and her connections to thank! Over 26 artists will either be vending, making live art, or hosting activities over the course of four days: November 13-14 and 20-21. The patio space at 1208 Chicon will be filled with tables and tents from 2pm – 6pm. If you want to see Austin Studio Tour, but don’t have much time, beelining to a hot spot like East Austin Cutie-o Tour is definitely an efficient way to go!

One thing that is exceptionally cool about this event is the live art. Each day of the event, a different set of street artist will be spray painting on large panels. These panels will be offered up for sale upon completion. It’s not often that you can watch art being made and then buy it right away!

Live Music

Saturday, Nov 13 Kirsten Boyd is hosting a musical theater showcase. Kirsten is a piano instructor, audition coach, and friend to many opera and stage singers in town. She and her crew are performing on and off over the 4 hour event. If you love what you see, come back to Dear Diary for Kirsten’s monthly Piano Parties (event calendar). It’s kind of a cross between open mic and karaoke for musical theater folks, with Kirsten accompanying on piano.

Sunday, Nov 14 Dave Yeats is performing three sets from 2pm – 6pm on the patio. Dave is a fantastic guitarist and singer song writer, and his set list is a mix of covers and originals. You can listen to Dave Yeats on Reverb Nation.

Saturday, Nov 20 and Sunday, Nov 21 Caroline Stradley has booked a full line-up of 9 musicians to perform. Caroline, whose stage name is Rusty Paige, is a talented singer songwriter with a lovely voice (Apple Music). She is connected to many musicians through her Monday night open mics at Dear Diary Coffeehouse (event calendar). Her Austin Studio Tour performers are a mix of singer-songwriters from open mics and musician friends.
